How do I provide for my son with bad credit?
Sarah asked:
When I was 18 I messed up pretty bad with a credit card and a car loan. I ended up getting sick and losing both of my jobs and incurred all of the medical bills. I have never been able to pay them off. I ended up getting married 2 years ago and I still haven’t paid off my debt because I felt guilty about my husband having to pay off my debt when it wasn’t his to deal with. Anyways. I have about $10,000 in debt between everything, and I haven’t worked in a year because I’ve been a stay at home mom. Unfortunately my husband and I are planning on filing for a divorce when we get back to the states next May, and I am so worried that I will not be able to even get an apartment or even a job because of my credit and because I haven’t had a job and I don’t pay the bills. We live in Navy housing so we don’t have to worry about any bills other than the phone and cable.
I realize this is my own fault and I want desperately to take responsibility.
As I stated, I don’t feel right about using my husband’s money to fix my debt…. I’ve been looking for a job for a few months now, but where we are stationed it is very difficult to find any type of job. It took me 7 months to find one before I got pregnant and became a stay at home mom. We leave next May and I am terrified I will be living in a cardboard box. ANY ADVICE?

Couldn’t you get a job at the base exchange or the school you send your child to?
10K isn’t really a huge amount of debt. It’s less than a car loan these days. You could pay it off working a minimum wage job. I don’t envision it being a picnic, to be sure, but you should get something right away. The sooner you get started on paying it off, the sooner you can address and reverse the fear of ending up homeless.
