No, Middle America is not stupid. They are actively being manipulate and lied to.
When you see those town halls with grey haired people who are scared about health care reform remember one thing:
We all (those of us with grey hair) grew up with the fairness doctrine. We do not think it possible that the likes of Limbaugh and Beck would be allowed to blatantly lie about what is proposed. We grew up with news being Walter Cronkite, who reported, not pontificated. We expect news to contain facts, not be entertainment.
We can’t believe that when elected public figures like Palin stand up and talk about death boards, and euthanasia that they can be lying. Sure everyone knows politicians can be corrupt, but the wholesale lying we are seeing now is not something most of us expect or even believe can be possible.
The problem is not middle america, the problem is a corrupt right wing that has learned how easy it is to scare average people with lies, and how they can get them to vote against their own best interests by using fear.

My very interesting and verrrryyyy intelligent answers contact (contrary to the sweeping proclamations made here by those who do not know a thing about you) that is an EXCELLENT POINT. The nincompoops who accused you of a willingness to hand over our debt to our kids/grand kids need to read your question. Some people are so quick to lash out that they miss the point entirely.
It’s scary to witness the news vids of the mob mentality infecting so many who appear at these town hall meetings supposedly for the purpose of exercising free speech. What happened to intelligent discourse? What’s to be gained from screaming and shoving, ultimately driving congress-people and state reps, etc. from the podium. It’s as if the moral majority (read: right-wing extremists) is so furious at the election of Barack Obama that they’re getting rabid.
Stephen Gibbs has repeatedly said in his regular press conferences that the President will keep his word regarding taxes for the middle-income sector. Give the guy a chance. Shut up and listen already!
