I got myself into a bad loan with a new car 3 years ago. I need to do something about the payments, because I can’t afford to keep wasting money like I am. I’m soon to be going operational in the Air Force, so military benefits are possible, but I don’t know what’s available. I would love to keep the car, but I still owe $13K, and am married but my wife and I don’t have great credit to do anything with it ourselves. Any help or advice?

Basically about 6 months ago i chose to finance this car mainly because it was my first car and i did not do much shopping around and now im at the point where i no longer want the car anymore sad to say. It’s not that i can’t afford the car its that I’m starting to realize that i had more options as a first buyer instead of just settling with the first simple buy that came to me. Now I’m basically looking for options as to getting rid of the car without harming my credit as bad. Which I’m sure is probabely impossible. I’m also looking at getting a different car aswell.

I am really getting killed by the transportation arrangement i have set up now. Let me put it this way, i am paying close to 600 dollars a month, including insurance, for a car that is worth less than 10,000. I CAN save up for a down payment or just used car but with my staggering payments it would take me about a year or more to build up a respectable DP. I need to really be saving money right now, i have no savings so if i get canned or laid off i have nothing, plus i have student loans to pay off and with this ball and chain i have no extra cash to do so. So is it possible to get financed for a car with bad credit and a small DP without getting screwed?
In reference to answer #2 I’ll restate this, WITH NO DOWN PAYMENT.

And yes i know it will not be my dream car, i just want a car that doesn’t look, feel, smell or drive like a family of crack addicts have had it.
Thanks for the detail regarding the upside down loan. Actually what i am in is a rent to own program, so i can leave the the car anytime i want for another car for only a 250.00 program cancellation fee. The reason i am in a rent to own is because my credit is not good enough to let me lease a car so i am stuck with a 2003 KIA Rio for almost 600 a month….for 36 months should i choose to follow through, i don’t i only need it for the short term.

Her credit score fell about 160-200points, she just finished paying $1900 on her last card, now wants to buy a $17,000 car with $8000 as a down payment, her mother is willing to co-sign but my friend is unsure if she’ll get the loan if she does the monthly payments would be out of her price range. I had a pre approved car loan and it had a 30 day time limit on it. 2 weeks before it expired I went in to the preferred dealer the loan company gave me and I had to fill out this packet and give to the dealer. Anyways, I drove the car off the lot and have been driving it for 2 weeks thinking it was all good. Now I’m being told that I can’t get the loan because for 1 I didn’t turn in a phone bill (I have a pre paid phone, I don’t get one and the packet said in the borrower’s guidlines that a utility bill could be used instead) and 2 that my loan time has now been expired for 3 days and that they can’t help me. What should I do, I got a pre approved loan because I have bad credit, all the loan company told me was to find alternative financing or take the car back, so whats up? Can they do that to me? What are my options? I don’t think dealer will finance me because of my credit and I have no co-signer, should I try to go through another pre approved loan for the same car and get that worked out?
